What do I need to know about Arts Adventure Camp?
AFC Arts Adventure Camp was established in 2004. We are owned and operated
by Arts for Children of Toronto, a registered charity that engages children
and youth from underserved communities in the Greater Toronto Area in
the arts, through participation in accessible, high quality and innovative
programs. The goal of the camp is to provide quality arts programming
and traditional camp activities in a safe, fun and supportive environment.
The camp is co-ed with campers ranging in age from 7 - 15 years. It is
designed to make summer camp more accessible to low-income families.

Where is the camp?
The camp is run out of a school in the West end of Toronto. In 2007,
it was held at Portage Trail Community Junior School at Jane & Weston
Road. We have requested this same site for our 2008 camp season.

What do I wear everyday?
All staff are required to wear a staff t-shirt (the camp will provide
you with two, but additional shirts may purchased), so that they are identifiable
to both campers and their parents. We always encourage staff to dress
for the weather and the activities they are doing, so they are modeling
the expected behaviour for our campers.

How do you choose staff members?
Camp staff are chosen through an application and interview process.
Arts Adventure looks for staff who have demonstrated skill in working
with children and in the arts. They must show enthusiasm for the arts
and for working with children along with a strong sense of responsibility.
Counsellors must be at least 16 years of age by the start of the summer.
Arts specialists and leadership staff will be finished post-secondary
education with considerable work experience behind them. References are
checked for all potential staff members and a police reference check is
required for all staff who are hired.

training June 13-15 & June 27 - July 4th. All staff will be required
to work our post-camp tear down day August 18, 2008. The regular
camp day for campers is 8:30 am - 4:15 pm, Monday to Friday.

Are there any days where staff are required to stay late?
Yes. All staff are required to stay late for staff meetings and Visitor's
Day. Staff working in the extended care programs will start their day
at 7:30am for the breakfast club or end at 5:45pm for after camp care.
There may be times when co-counsellors need to stay late to prepare an
activity or write camp evaluations. This time is considered to be a part
of your regular work day, therefore no extra compensation will be issued.

What kind of support can I expect to receive as a staff member?
Arts Adventure recognizes how demanding the camp environment can be.
Every effort will be made to ensure that you are successful in your work
at camp. The Director and other supervisory staff are always available
to lend a helping hand whether its tackling a problem or needing an extra
player for a game of basketball! Ongoing feedback from staff is valued
and helps us to improve the camp and make it an enjoyable place to work.

What if I have to miss a day of work?
There are only 6 weeks of camp sessions, so your daily attendance is
mandatory. The only acceptable excuse for missing a day of work is illness.
Any other obligations that interfere with your ability to attend camp
must be discussed with the Director.
